CHINA Observers Say Absence Of Mainland Bishops At Synod Inevitable

The director of the Holy See Press Office, Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, confirmed earlier that no bishop from mainland China would attend the Oct. 5-26 synod. "An accord was not reached with the Chinese authorities for the participation of other bishops," he said in press conference on Oct. Anthony Liu Bainian, vice chairman of the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association (CCPA), called it "disappointing" to see not even a mainland priest or layperson appointed to the ongoing synod as an auditor, while 41 bishops from other Asian countries are among the 253 Synod Fathers. Liu explained the CCPA had not opposed the Vatican's list of invitees for the previous synod but did suggest replacing some of them with younger bishops because of concerns over health and old age. The invitees in 2005 were government-recognized Bishops Anthony Li Du'an of Xi'an, Aloysius Jin Luxian of Shanghai and Luke Li Jingfeng of Fengxiang.
